The Proteas did not last long in the first session of Day 4 and were bowled out for 321 early on. Bavuma only added one run to his overnight total to finish on 172.
They set the West indies 391 to win and the general consensus amongst fans and media was that an early end to the game was upon us.
The feeling proved to be right. As wickets troubled in the visitors’ camp.
Only one player in the top six managed a double-digit score, Kraigg Brathwaite (18), who was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada for the 4th time in the match.
This sparked a domino effect as Raymon Reifer was dismissed for a duck when Rabada strangled him down leg.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul was the first victim of Simon Harmer, who forced the batter into a defence stroke but was beaten by the turn and edged to the keeper.
Keshav Maharaj then cleaned up Roston Chase for a duck, and Jermaine Blackwood was dismissed by Harmer for his second.
Maharaj took his second trapping Kyle Mayers lbw, but it came at a cost, when whilst celebrating after the DRS confirmed the wicket, he seemed to have injured his Achilles. He was taken off on a stretcher and the update came from CSA that he would undergo an MRI.
West Indies was 34/6 in 18.5 overs as Lunch was called.
After lunch, Jason Holder added just 19 before Gerald Coetzee forced an inside edge into his stumps. Windies were reduced to 82/7.
Coetzee steamed in with a beautifully angled delivery beating Da Silva (34) for pace and crashing into his off-stump. West Indies were in trouble at 87/8 needing 304 to win.
Alzarri Joseph went swinging and helped them past the 100-run mark with two sixes and a four.
Coetzee however took the Windies’ 9th and his third, Kemar Roach cutting the ball to deep third man.
Harmer wrapped up the opposition with his third, dismissing Joseph to hand SA a 284-run win.
