South Africa completed their second ODI Series win in England with a 5-run win at Lord’s.
Despite testing conditions with the bat and a late English surge led by Buttler and Archer, South Africa’s disciplined approach and key breakthroughs at crucial moments proved the difference.
The Proteas lost the toss and were put into bat first at Lord’s. The light drizzle before the game saw a delayed start.
The conditions did not make it easy to bat.
Markram and Rickelton started well. They put on 73 before Rickelton skied one for a simple catch by the keeper. He was out for 35 off 33 balls.
Bavuma didn’t last long in the middle, he was nicked off by Adil Rashid, SA losing their 2nd for 78 runs.
Markram would have kicked himself, just one run short from back-to-back milestones, he hit the ball straight back at Rashid. SA were now 93-3 after 19 overs.
Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs were solid and precise.
The pair took SA to 240 with a 147-run partnership.
Breetzke was dismissed by an Archer yorker lbw after 85 off 77 balls (7 fours, 3 sixes). He now has five 50-plus scores in 5 matches. No one has done that in ODI cricket.
Stubbs also brought up a half-century, a second of his career. He scored 58 off 62 balls (2 fours, 1 six) before he was run out. SA were now 259-5 after 42 overs.
Brevis took South Africa three runs shy of 300, smacking 3 sixes and 3 fours for his 20-ball 42. His attacking intent saw him top edge to backward square.
Bosch’s 32 not out was handy at the back end, helping SA post 330-8, the second-highest total at Lord’s in ODIs.
The highest successful run chase at Lord’s was 326-8 in 2002 by India.
South Africa got the perfect start with the ball. He found the inside edge of Jamie Smith’s first ball.
England worked their way back into the match. They got themselves to 66, but on the last ball of the 13th over, No. 1 ODI bowler Keshav Maharaj bowled Ben Duckett.
Joe Root (61 off 72 balls) and Jacob Bethell (58 off 40 balls) were key to the chase. But they were both dismissed. Bosch took out Bethell to reduce England to 143-3, then Maharaj orchestrated the stumping of Root to make it 147-4 with 25 overs done.
Despite explosive knocks from Jos Butler 61(51), Will Jacks 39(33) and an impressive cameo by Jofra Archer 27(14), which saw the game go down to the wire, the Proteas clinched the victory, winning by 5 runs.
This is their second ODI win in England since their victory in 1998.
