Having come in after Quinton de Kock’s departure, Smuts steadied the ship and paced his innings well to help South Africa chase 255 runs in 45 overs.
The 31-year-old shared a partnership of 95 runs with 22-year-old Kyle Verreynne who also managed a maiden ODI half century.
Man of the Series, Heinrich Klaasen, produced a third 50-plus score of the series, finishing with 242 runs at an average of 80.67 in just three innings.
Having been sent in to bat first, Australia managed a below average 255-7 in their fifty overs. Homeboy, Marnus Labuschagne, starred with an incredible maiden ODI century.
The Proteas bowlers were superb in the absence of Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi and Beuran Hendricks.
Lutho Sipamla and Anrich Nortje set the tone upfront with the new ball going at under three an over.
