With vision 2023 well underway in South African Cricket, a number of young batsmen are creating a selection headache for the national selectors with big centuries in the second and third rounds of the Momentum One Day Cup.
Titans vs Dolphins
The Titans hosted the Dolphins at Supersport Park on Friday, 07 February, and were looking to register their first win of the competition after losing their first encounter at home in the first round.
Batting at number four in the tournament for the Titans, Dean Elgar did what he does best and carried his bat once again. His knock of 74 runs included five fours and two sixes and helped the Titans post 275 runs for the loss of four wickets.
It looked a steep mountain to climb for the visitors, but a superb 147* from the 23-year-old Grant Roelofsen saw the Dolphins chase the total with just two balls to spare.
Knights vs Warriors
The two teams headed to the Mangaung Oval with a desire to get a positive result, especially after both teams lost their first round of fixtures.
A determined Yaseen Vallie rescued the Warriors after they found themselves in all sorts of trouble losing the top-four batters with low scores. Vallie ground his way to a superb 90 runs to help the Warriors reach 214 all out.
The Debutant, Stephan Tait, and Dyllan Matthews picked up three wickets apiece and secured a 50-run win for the Warriors.
Cape Cobras vs Lions
The Lions went to Paarl with a lot of confidence in their performances away from home and they did not disappoint.
Ryan Rickelton’s brilliant 157 off 135 deliveries helped the Lions post 320 runs in their 50 overs and it proved to be too much for the home side to chase down.
Half-centuries from Zubayr Hamza and George Linde weren’t enough for the Cape Cobras as they were thrashed by 49 runs.
Warriors vs Titans
The Titans bowlers put on a good bowling performance at St George’s Park, putting the home side under pressure early on in their innings.
Dayyaan Galiem’s intensity and good energy upfront saw him pick up the first two wickets of the day to put the Warriors on the backfoot.
Eddie Moore (103) and Rudi Second’s (51) century stand saved the Warriors from embarrassment as they managed to pull the team out of a hole to post a total of 233 runs.
Tony de Zorzi’s 104-ball 98 led the Titans to a five-wicket win. They chased the total with 11.2 overs to spare.
Dolphins vs Cape Cobras
Ashwell Prince’s men came out guns blazing in the third round. Zubayr Hamza came to the party with a super 129 runs and was well supported by the inform Pieter Malan (71 off 81) and George Linde (49 off 28).
Cape Cobras posted 320 runs in their 50 overs which is the joint highest score of the campaign after the first three rounds.
The visitors won by five runs on D/L method, thanks to another good all-round performance from Jason Smith who returned figures of 3-36 in six overs.
