Lutho Sipamla has learnt to take “accountability” while in the Proteas set up. The move to the Lions will help him cement his spot in the Proteas ODI/T20I sides and contest for a Test cap, writes Ongama Gcwabe.

The 21-year-old got his ODI debut a little over a month ago against the World Champions in England.

Knowing Lutho, he loves a challenge and undoubtedly would’ve learnt a lot from the international experience. He will grow from it and try his best to be a regular in the Proteas set-up.

“[I learnt] Precision and about taking accountability for the work that needs to be put in,” said Sipamla exclusively to Cricket Fanatics Magazine.

“In order to make sure that you can provide what the team needs when the team needs it and make sure that the team moves forward towards the correct direction.”

The young man from the Friendly City recently signed with the Lions, a decision that in my opinion will only grow him into a mature fast bowler.

“The move to the Lions, for me, was purely a cricketing decision,” he said.

“I am looking to exploit the upcountry conditions, which normally has been known to assist fast bowlers, with pace and bounce – a factor that contributed to the move, which is quite exciting for me.

“[I’m] looking to bring a lot of energy,  excitement and apply my hard work ethic within the squad.”

Lions coach, Wandile Gwavu, has worked with Lutho before and it can be expected that he will make him fit in seamlessly.

“Yes I’ve grown up around coach Wandile, said Sipamla. “He’s very hardworking, honest and brings positive energy at all times, which is always good when at practices and in matches for a player.”

Having returned from India with the Proteas after the tour was postponed due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Sipamla leaves some advice on how to train in these times.

“I’m just trying to do home-based exercises which will help me stay as fit as I can during the lockdown,” said Sipamla.

“My advice would probably be to just try and make it fun I guess. Get your brothers and sisters involved and look to make it stimulating, that’s what I’ll be looking to do during the lock downtime.”
