This round of the CSA 4-Day Series provided the interim head coach with a good headache ahead of the Test series Down Under.
“Score runs” was echoed from the skipper Dean Elgar and Kyle Verreynne in particular answered with 87 runs against the Titans in their first clash of the tournament and dominated against the Rocks with a scintillating 201 not out off 221 balls – it was an aggressive knock that took the game away from their neighbour’s completely.
“We can’t do that without the start that we got up front. I think against the Titans as well, we sort of had a nice platform and I could come in and be quite aggressive.
“If the situation allows for it, then I’ll do it but it’s not necessarily a particular approach I want to take on. It’s more a compliment to the guys at the top order.”
The Proteas’ batting concerns have been a hot topic over the last few months, it has been refreshing to see the players get much-needed runs under their belt which should inspire confidence with the Tests against Australia being less than a month away.
Assuming that Kyle Verreynne and Heinrich Klaasen are vying for one spot in the XI, unless Maketa decides to opt for the 7-4 split which would ultimately be the brittle batting lineup longer. Both of them have raised their hands so high with double hundreds it’ll be impossible to overlook one of them.
“I take a lot of confidence just knowing that I’ve got some runs behind me,” Kyle explained.
“I think England was quite a tough series for all the batters. To get runs like this sort of gives me a bit of confidence and allows me to just keep believing in what I’m doing.
“I think that’s probably the most important thing going into an international series, you don’t want to really be questioning yourself going into a big series like Australia.”
