Jonty Rhodes has applied for the India fielding coach role. Should CSA counter-offer?

There is an ongoing debate as to whether the Proteas should have a full backroom staff clear out.

The suggestions are that Ottis Gibson must be replaced and with that his entire coaching staff.

One of those positions is the fielding coach. Justin Ontong is currently in that role, but there haven’t been alarming improvements with regards to the Proteas’ ability in the field.

In fact, during the World Cup, the Proteas looked far from their sharp and effective selves.

When you think about South Africa and fielding, the first player that springs to mind is Rhodes, who was regarded as the Proteas best ever fielder.

It will frustrate many South Africans that he has applied for the role of India’s fielding coach.

The news was confirmed on Thursday by a senior BCCI functionary.

“Yes, Rhodes has applied and while it is true that he hasn’t coached any international team, he has been involved with Mumbai Indians for nine seasons and, as per the eligibility criteria, you need to have worked with an IPL team for three seasons if not an international team,” the functionary said.

Should CSA counter-offer and try to lure Rhodes to take the Proteas fielding job? or are there better options out there.
