“Trying to see how I can add value, but it’s been a real privilege to be back,” said newly-appointed Proteas Strategic Consultant, JP Duminy, in his first interview since he returned to the South African national team setup.
In addition to sharing his extensive experience of playing international cricket at the highest level, Duminy’s priority is to build relationships with the players and support staff. “More importantly for me is having relationships with pretty much all the players and staff that are currently in the mix here,” said Duminy. He continued, “I’m very fond of having one-on-one coffees and chats. Something I’m looking forward to and the goal is to somehow add value here.”
In the few days that Duminy has spent in the South African team setup, Duminy was impressed with the attention to detail and role clarity given to the players. “In my capacity now and everyone in the technical staff want to make sure they provide them with enough information but also facilitate conversations and make sure they ask the right questions for them to find the answers as well.”
Duminy believes families are integral to the well-being of players. “When it comes to this bubble life, it’s important to have perspective and purpose outside of the game as well.” Additionally, Duminy said, “It’s important people understand that your family lives this journey with you.”
Duminy is confident of South Africa’s chances at the World Cup. “I love what I’m seeing. I love the conversations that are happening. Also, there’s this belief in each other, which is great to see. Also contagious. You coming into the environment and guys know what they want to do. That’s what you want to see going into a World Cup,” concluded Duminy.
