Ireland have pulled off a stunning win against the Proteas in the 2nd ODI. And it’s quite the achievement to remember for the hosts.
After posting a robust total of 290 at halftime, Ireland were eyeing the early momentum with the ball. Despite Janneman Malan’s counterattack, Craig Young’s pace dismissed Aiden Markram, who top-edged a pull to cover. The visitors were definitely in a spot of bother when Temba Bavuma picked out square-leg in an attempt to raise the scoring rate.
At 51/2, South Africa were badly in need of a stabilizing partnership. Rassie van der Dussen provided able company for Malan, who periodically scored boundaries to keep the score moving along steadily.
The pair added 108 together, but Malan’s quest to clear the boundary was his undoing. He failed to connect cleanly off left-arm spinner George Dockrell, and that provided an invaluable breakthrough
In the very next over, off-spinner Andy McBrine trapped van der Dussen in front, and the close review was futile. That opened the floodgates, and Ireland regularly struck whenever South African batsmen aimed to swing for the hills. After David Miller’s dismissal, it proved to be too much for the Proteas’ lower order, and they folded for 247 in the penultimate over, setting up a respectable 43-run victory for the hosts.
Ireland 290/5
South Africa 247 (Malan 84, van der Dussen 49 – McBrine 2/34, Adair 2/43, Little 2/45)
