Laura Wolvaardt says she has enjoyed her role as captain in the absence of Sune Luus and Dane van Niekerk.

Wolvaardt has captained the team in the last two games, in the absence of the current captain Sune Luus. When being asked about whether she could see a future as captain for the Momentum Proteas, she said that it’s not something that she has thought about much until this moment, but something that she enjoyed more than she thought she would.

“It’s not something that I thought much about before this moment, I think I was just very focused on my own game, and trying to solidify my spot in the side; to get this opportunity as a young cricketer was really cool and I enjoyed it more than I thought I did.

“Hopefully, I can just learn a lot from it as a cricketer. We still have two great other captains in Dane and Sune, so I’ll just learn a lot from them and see what happens.”

Wolvaardt showed that she has the qualities to be a future captain for the Proteas because of her calm demeanour, and her humility – saying that she’s just been “trying to solidify her spot in the side”, despite being in the top 10 of the ODI rankings.

It is clear that her spot is very much solidified at the top of the order, and she’s not only going to score heaps of runs for the Proteas, but she has potential to lead her country in a more permanent capacity one day.

When asking Wolvaardt what impact Claire Terblanche, her Western Province coach, has had on her career, she said: “I obviously spend a lot of time with Claire in the nets, when I’m at home I’m training with her every day or every second day, so just having her there to throw balls to me and give me advice all year round is crucial to my game; so I’m very thankful to her, and she’s definitely played a major role in the past few seasons to help me with my game and to get it where it’s at today.”
