Get to know Standard Bank Brighton RPC player Tyrese Karelse who was selected in the South Africa U19 World Cup squad.

CSA announced the South African 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad.

A Standard Bank Brighton RPC player, Tyrese Karelse has been announced as one of the players who will represent the country in the tournament that is scheduled to be held in South Africa from 17 January to 9 February 2020.

This will be the thirteenth edition of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, and the second to be held in South Africa.

Tyrese is a grade eleven learner at Protea High School in Bridgton, Oudtshoorn and plays cricket for the South Western District under the guidance of Baakier Abrahams, the SWD Head Coach.

He has been part of the Standard Bank Bridgton Regional Performance Centre programme for several years and has been one of the standout players at the RPC in recent times. Under Head Coach Elridge Booysen – RPC Pitchvision Coach of the Year 2017 and Merlin Masimela an ex SWD player now on the CSA Level III Course, he has grown a lot as a player.

“As the bank that is at the heart of cricket development in the country, we are very proud of the talent that comes out of our -RPCs and we recognise the excellent work that is done by the coaches. On behalf of Standard Bank, we wish Tyrese and the entire team all the best for the upcoming tournament.  Not only do they represent the communities from which they come, but South Africans at large,” said Desiree Pooe, Head Standard Bank Sponsorship.

Tyrese has been part of the SWD and Players Performance Plan (PPP) squads consistently for the past 4 years having been identified as a player for the future. He was recently selected to play for the SWD Provincial Men’s XI against KZN Coastal in their first fixture for the season. It is no surprise that he made the team to represent South Africa.

As a schoolboy, he scored 52 in his 1st class debut at Kingsmead against an attack that boasted franchise bowlers and showed that he has the potential to grow even more through the Standard Bank RPC and CSA High Performance programmes.

“I know that there are not many players who get the opportunity to play 1st class cricket from all of the talented players I have watched over the past years. The fact that he has done this through the Standard Bank RPC Programme highlights the importance of partnerships such as the one with Standard Bank and these phenomenal programmes that are making such a difference to the youth of our beautiful country. They otherwise would not be playing cricket and we would have missed this talent,” said Gary Hampson, Coach Education Manager at SWDC

South Africa hosted the tournament in 1998, were champions in 2014 and are set to play the opening match at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on 17 January. South Africa will contend with the United Arab Emirates and Canada, all countries represented in Group D of the 16-team tournament, the final of which is scheduled for 9 February 2020.
