The Momentum Proteas might have lost their opening World Cup encounter, but on Friday night, they certainly won the hearts of many cricket lovers in South Africa.

“We’re making history here.” These were the words uttered by Nicole, a cricket fan when I asked her about the significance of South Africa hosting a T20 Women’s World Cup for the first time on African soil.

Just like many in the crowd, Nicole took time out of her Friday night schedule to support the Momentum Proteas in their opening match against Sri Lanka at Newlands.

Despite the Proteas losing by three runs in a highly contested match, the side will surely leave Cape Town smiling, knowing that they have the backing of their faithful in their backyard.

As it had been confirmed earlier that online tickets were sold out, I took a stroll around the stadium during the inning break to feel the atmosphere and vibe in what was my first time covering an international cricket match.

The vibe was electrifying, to say the least.

It was more refreshing to see that a lot of women came out to enjoy the cricket, screaming their hearts and lungs out each time South Africa took a wicket or scored runs.

The feel around the stadium was certainly centred around the match being more than just an ordinary cricket game. It felt personal and close to home, and it made me realize the strides that have been made in promoting women’s cricket in South Africa.

I was overwhelmed by how the fans I interacted with received me, allowing me to speak and ask them questions. In my quest, I came across three fans, one from overseas, who hit the nail on the head and openly expressed what an occasion like this meant for women’s sports in the country.

Nicole, Lindsey, and Mariska shared their thoughts about the spectacle.

Nicole: “The atmosphere is amazing, I’m so excited to see this huge support for the women.”

“We’re making history here because this is the first time that we’ve had so much support for our women’s team.” Women don’t get the same support as the men’s team, and the fact that it’s sold out means something. I’m so happy for them.”

Lindsey from Canada: “This is my first cricket match and my first trip to South Africa.”

“It’s been amazing so far; the country is beautiful, the people are lovely, and the cricket match is very exciting.”

Mariska: “It’s my first time here watching and supporting women’s cricket.”

“I never imagined myself here at Newlands supporting a full women’s team, this is evolution, and seeing people of all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life supporting women, it’s magnificent.”

With that said, the Momentum Proteas will be hoping for an equal, if not better, turnout in Gqeberha and Paarl when they head over to those respective grounds.

As for the Newlands faithful, a date with the women’s side will be on the 21st of February, an experience not to be missed.
