Faf du Plessis, among other Proteas players, play a part in the fight against poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic all over South Africa.

South Africa, like most countries all over the world, is under lockdown due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Our country is one of the poorest in the world and the lockdown has made it much more difficult for many families to put food on the table.

Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma [to name a few] have taken it upon themselves to contribute in helping families in need.

“Probably the biggest reflection for me in this time of lockdown is gratitude of what I have. With that has come a huge movement in my heart regarding people who don’t have it,” said Du Plessis.

“It just organically grew within myself and Imari’s heart to help in a personal level.”

A lot of people have gone to social media to show the world the extreme measures they have to go to in trying to get food for their families.

“There was someone who contacted me on social media and asked if I could help. They needed to feed a small town of 174 families for a month because there was hardly any income coming into their families,” he explained.

“We raised the money within a day and a half.

“It breaks my heart to see little kids standing in lines all across fields just waiting to get food. I think maybe that’s the movement inside me because I’m a father myself now and I’ll do absolutely anything for my daughter. That has hugely made me want to help them.”

Du Plessis now plans to continue playing a part beyond the lockdown because many South Africans have been struggling even before the lockdown.

“But I’m not done with it, I feel connected to this cause so I’ll keep doing as much as I can to make sure we can feed as many people and take this to a bigger scale of making a huge impact.

“I’ve had good conversations with Siya [Kolisi]. We have similar hearts and we’re going to do some stuff together hopefully soon,” he concluded.
