“It’s been a tough two days. Extremely disappointing, especially after the series we had against India,” said Proteas Head Coach, Mark Boucher, at the end of Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Day 2 of the first Test was dominated entirely by New Zealand, as they posted 482 runs in response to South Africa’s first innings score of 95. In addition to a listless bowling performance, a significant number of dropped catches contributed to New Zealand taking a 387-run lead. “We just haven’t come out and given the energy expected of us,” said Boucher. Despite South Africa’s disappointing performance on the first two days of the Test match, Boucher insisted that the plans that were formulated were right, but the team was unable to implement them.
The team composition for the first Test was the subject of considerable debate, particularly the exclusion of Ryan Rickelton, who has dominated this season of four-day cricket in South Africa. Boucher confirmed that Rickelton was not considered to be a backup wicket-keeper. The opening partnership and sixth batter option required Sarel Erwee to open the batting with Dean Elgar and Zubayr Hamza to slot in at six.
Boucher attributed South Africa’s top order concerns to a “lack of confidence.” While the pitches that South Africa have played on have been challenging, “personal form is not where they want it to be.”
