South Africa have pulled off their highest chase since the victory against Australia in Perth 2008 to level the three-Test series against India, winning the second Test by 7 wickets.

Headlined by a monumental effort from captain, Dean Elgar, who scored 96 off 188 balls, South Africa have fought hard to chase down 240 against India on a challenging Wanderers wicket.

Day 4 of the second Test began late owing to showers in Johannesburg. Resuming at 118/2, with 122 runs more to get, South Africa began proactively, with Dean Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen finding the boundaries regularly.

Van der Dussen found the ideal time to return to form, scoring 40 off 92 balls, and stitching an important 82-run partnership with Elgar. After van der Dussen’s dismissal, South Africa were still in a precarious position, but a 68-run partnership between Elgar and Bavuma sealed victory for South Africa.

Elgar’s boundaries off Mohammed Shami released the pressure off South Africa, and the Proteas batters never really let any of the Indian bowlers settle into a rhythm. Bavuma’s cracking drive and pull shot off Shardul Thakur all but won it for the South Africans.

After losing to India at the Centurion, South Africa have level the series 1-1 at the Wanderers, with the series to be decided at Cape Town on January 11.
