The Durban outfit might’ve fumbled a near-perfect start in their opening SA20 match against the Joburg Super Kings. However, they showed what they’re capable of against a star-studded MI Cape Town side. | ✍️ Avuyile Sawula

“Simplicity” was the term used by Durban Super Giants all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen when he described his side’s 5-wicket victory over MI Cape Town at Newlands on Friday.

The Durban side, which entered the game on the heels of a 16-run loss to JSK three days ago, finally stamped their authority on the tournament, showing with both ball and bat their capabilities.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, the visitors set the tempo early with the bowlers when Kyle Mayers delivered a beauty to dismiss Dewald Brevis for a duck in the first over. A delivery that took the life out of a buzzing Newlands crowd.

The rest of the bowling attack followed suit, with Subrayen being the standout bowler. The 29-year- old took two wickets in four overs with an economy rate of 7.25.

He expressed how delighted he was with the result.

“We are happy to have the win under our belt because it creates more momentum going forward,” he said.

“It would’ve been the cherry on top if we managed to get the bonus point, but I think the actual word for it is bonus!”

“With a tournament like this, the turnaround for other games is quite quick; any momentum we can gain, we’ll take.”

After letting a solid start against JSK slip away when the Durban side had them at 27/4 after 6 overs, only for Donovan Ferreira to help his team claw its way to victory, Subrayen admitted that keeping things simple was at top of their minds in ensuring that they didn’t choke for a second game running.

“A good word would be simplicity,” he said.

“I think it was just a case of backing your plans and backing your gut feeling.’ I think the guys did that from the start.”

“Kyle’s start with getting Dewland in front kinda set the tone for the bowling and then the guys just followed through with it.”

With a win in the bag, the Super Giants will now host the Paarl Royals on Sunday at Kingsmead, at 13:30. Subrayen says making it two wins on the trot is the only thing on their minds.

“We are looking to win, but it will just be following the same processes,” he said.

“Those very processes helped us win today and we’ll just be taking learnings out of today’s game to try and get that perfect game.”
