Proteas spinner, Keshav Maharaj, assured South Africa that Quinton De Kock is in a good mental space going into the third match of the World Cup and that the team is closer than before after the drama of the week.

The Proteas World Cup team has had a tough week as much as the South African cricket community. Going into a must-win match against Sri Lanka, there was a worry on whether De Kock would be in a good space to play the game to the best of his abilities.

On Thursday evening, while addressing members of the media, Keshav Maharaj, put those worries to bed, emphasizing the mental toughness of De Kock and the togetherness of the Proteas team.

“Yes it’s been a tough week,” said Maharaj.

“He’s in a good space. It’s been a tough week for him, but he’s a very tough character. He’s all good.” He added.

Maharaj spoke briefly on the state of the team after what happened in the week.

“For us, it’s not a big deal. Respect is one of our pillars, that’s what it boils down to. The spirits have been really high at training today. I think the boys are in a good stead, our focus is back on the field again.” He said.

“We drew a lot of inspiration from the way we’ve dealt with things in the past. Yes, it (the drama of the week) has brought us together. The boys are mature enough and adult enough to handle the situation.”

With De Kock making a potential comeback into the playing XI tomorrow, the management & selectors will have a selection headache since Reeza Hendricks performed well in the absence of De Kock.

If both De Kock and Hendricks play, then the Proteas will have a very different batting order with Bavuma potentially slipping down to three in the batting order.

“It’s down to the selectors whether he starts or not. If he does get the opportunity tomorrow, I’m sure he’ll be at the top of the order.

“Fortunately for us, I think everyone is adaptable to bat anywhere in the order.” He concluded.

The Proteas take on Sri Lanka at Sharjah on Saturday, 30 October, at 12:00 SAST.
