After an unbeaten 99 from Janneman Malan, Dale Steyn helped the Cape Town Blitz sneak a 15-run victory by picking up vital wickets especially at the back end in a thrilling Mzansi Super League opener, writes Naeemah Benjamin.

Steyn finished with figures of 3/25 at the Bullring which is normally a nightmare for bowlers and a batsmen’s paradise. That’s incredible figures by the Proteas stalwart.

Jozi Stars needed 214 to win but with the firepower in their lineup the bowlers had quite a tough job ahead of them.

But fear not, the Steyn remover was at his best. First picking up the wicket of Chris Gayle early on and not allowing him to settle and tee off.

Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen were the standout players for Johannesburg based team last year and they were looking like their absolute best once again.

But they were slowly and calmly taking the game away from the Blitz when Steyn came back into the attack and got both their wickets with Sisanda Magala taking almost identical diving catches.

Magala then bowled beautifully in the 19th over to put the Blitz in the driving seat to win with 27 needed off 12.

Anrich Nortje closed out the game.
