“That came as a very big surprise, I was never expecting it,” said Titans all-rounder, Chris Morris, a week after he became the most expensive buy in IPL history, with the Rajasthan Royals paying US$2.2 million for his services in IPL 2021.
Morris said emphatically, “The IPL is as stressful as international cricket,” given the number of people watching IPL games and the constant pressure to perform. While his record-breaking fee for this IPL will add “a little bit of pressure,” Morris is cognizant of the fact that “The auction is out of our control.
It’s an absolute lottery.” Having played for Rajasthan Royals in 2015, Morris is pleased to return to a familiar franchise, where he enjoys friendly relationships with the owners and support staff.
Reflecting on the increase in money in cricket, Morris said, “We’re eternally grateful.” Previous generations of cricketers, including his father’s generation, had to work full-time jobs, in addition to playing professional cricket. Modern times allow cricketers to pursue cricket full-time, with leagues around the world offering players financial security.
Over the last couple of seasons, there has been an improvement in Morris’ consistency with the ball. “A lot of it has to do with luck,” Morris said. “The consistency has got to do with keeping things simple,” he continued.
While there is conversation around Morris’ future for the Proteas, he stated firmly, “I’m focused on playing and performing for the Titans. I haven’t looked too far ahead in the future.”
His last conversation with the Proteas coaching staff and selectors was before the 2019 World Cup in England, “where the decision was made for me to play in the leagues around the world and follow what’s best for me as a cricketer and for my career.”
