South Africa dominated Day 1 of the second Test against India at the Bidvest Wanderers in Johannesburg, as a clinical bowling display featuring Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Duanne Olivier bundled out India for 202.

In response, South Africa posted 35/1 at the end of Day 1.

Duanne Olivier replaced Wiaan Mulder and Hanuma Vihari replaced Indian captain, Virat Kohli, who was reported to suffer from an upper back spasm. KL Rahul was named stand-in captain for this Test match.

India won the toss and chose to bat on a Wanderers wicket that was expected to be relatively slow on the first day, after which it was expected to quicken up. The pace and variable bounce on the pitch was evident on the first day itself, which the Proteas bowlers used to their advantage.

Jansen produced the first breakthrough, with Mayank Agarwal edging one outside the off-stump to Kyle Verreyne. The Indian batters struggled to find rhythm thanks to some disciplined bowling from South Africa’s pace quartet. The momentum swung in South Africa’s favour when Duanne Olivier dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane off consecutive deliveries.

India were never able to recover, despite a gritty 50 off 133 balls from KL Rahul, and a counterattacking 46 off 50 balls from Ravichandran Ashwin.

Jansen was the pick of South Africa’s bowlers, impressing with four wickets off his 17 overs. Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier, both, picked three wickets and conceded 64 runs after bowling 17 and 17.1 overs, respectively.

Although Lungi Ngidi doesn’t have wickets against his name, he bowled with immense control and troubled the Indian batters consistently.

In response to India’s 202, South Africa started tentatively, losing Aiden Markram early for 7 off 12 balls. Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen steadied the ship with an unbeaten 11 of 57 balls and 14 off 39 balls, respectively.
