Beuran Hendricks took a career-best 7/29 for the Lions against the Cobras, as we wrap up Day 1 of Round 2 of the 4-Day Franchise series.
The left-arm seamer, who recently was named in the Proteas’ 24-man white-ball squad to take on England, was destructive. He ripped the heart out of the Cobras batting lineup by removing Janneman Malan, Tony de Zorzi, Kyle Verreynne, Isma-eel Gafieldien, Goerge Linde, Onke Nyaku and Nandre Burger.
His’ barnstorming 7-wicket haul has put the Lions in the driver’s seat in their home game against the Cobras. It’s been quite the eventful year for the left-armer, who took a 5-wicket haul on his Test debut. It’s a testament to his potential as an all-format bowler. In addition, he offers some handy variety as well.
Kyle Verreynne showed the most resistance with a half-century, but the Lions bowlers made short work of the rest of the Cobras lineup.
The Lions started off briskly, with Ryan Rickelton and Dominic Hendricks putting on 55 runs. A flurry of wickets hasn’t deterred them to post a 28-run lead with 7 wickets in hand.
Cape Cobras 115 in 37.5 overs (Verreynne 51 – B Hendricks 7-29)
Lions 143/3 in 47 overs (D Hendricks 54* – Nyaku 1-22)
Knights vs Dolphins
The Knights have continued to make merry in their second home game. The talented young top-order batsman Raynard van Tonder is maintaining his consistency with a classy century against a new-look Dolphins bowling attack.
Matthew Kleinveldt and Jacques Snyman started off positively, laying down the platform for van Tonder to dig in and bat through, despite wickets falling regularly in the middle order.
For the Dolphins, Ottniel Baartman was again the pick of the bowlers. All-rounder Ruan de Swardt received a 4-day debut, as did the teenage quick Lifa Ntanzi. Each took a wicket, but Ntanzi struggled for control. Aside from Baartman, who took two wickets, five bowlers took one wicket apiece.
Knights 323/7 in 96 overs (van Tonder 119*, M Kleinveldt 44 – Ottniel Baartman 2-69)
Warriors vs Titans
It might have been a rain-affected day, but the Titans have made the early breakthroughs to take the upper hand. Lizaad Williams is continuing his prime wicket-taking form, and Gihahn Cloete was the star of the show with the bat, putting together a fighting unbeaten half-century.
Warriors 137/4 in 45 overs (Cloete 57* – L Williams 2-50)
