“I understand the deeply rooted significance of being the first black African captain,” said, Temba Bavuma, in his first press conference as South Africa’s new white-ball captain.
“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t mean anything to me. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me think of the journey,” Bavuma said. With the emotion that came with being appointed full-time captain for the next two years, Bavuma hopes to continue producing runs for the Proteas.
“I knew the game was always there. I’m pleased with the results I’ve been able to churn out. Hopefully, I can get better,” said Bavuma.
Widely praised for leading the Lions to the title in the recently-concluded CSA National T20 competition, Bavuma said, “I’ve enjoyed the responsibility of leading the side. The nature of serving people, the balancing act between your own ambition as a player and interest as a team.” Now, as a South African national team captain, “I’m super committed to the whole process. I’d like to lead the guys to something special.”
Meanwhile, Dean Elgar, who was appointed Test captain for the next two years, hopes to rebuild the Protea brand. “It’s not an ideal situation we’ve had over the last season or two.”
In order to rebuild the side, Elgar is excited by the prospect of blooding new talent in the team. “Exciting times to have fresh blood around,” said Elgar. In saying that, Elgar knows he will need the support of the experienced players in the team. “I’m going to rely on them to help me through this journey,” Elgar said.
Given the current schedule, where the Proteas play their next Test series in December against India, Elgar expects there will be a lot of behind-the-scenes work through the winter to ensure the Test team is ready for its next series.
