After being bowled out for 152, South Africa restricted Australia to 145-5 at stumps on Day 1 of the 1st Test Down Under.
It was a disappointing batting performance by Elgar and his men. The Proteas found themselves 4 down for 27 runs within the first hour.
The Proteas managed to recover after the collapse through Kyle Verreynne (64) and Temba Bavuma (38) but they only managed 152 in their first innings. Mitchell Starc’s 3-41 made a big impact for his side.
The Proteas bowlers managed to return the favour up top with the ball, reducing the Aussies to 3-27 after 9.2 overs, but a solid partnership from Steve Smith (36) and Travis Head (78*) was key to Australia edging close to the deficit.
Despite being 5 down by stumps, the Aussies are favourites to post a handsome lead on Day 2 as they trail by 7 runs.
