The Proteas will need valuable contributions from the youngsters to stand a chance against a strong English side, writes Ongama Gcwabe.

An extended run for Zubayr Hamza at number three and a homecoming for Port Elizabeth’s very own speedster in Anrich Nortje.

No doubt, there’s a lot at stake for these two test sides going into the third test match. If you think about it, it is fitting for St. George’s to be hosting such an occasion as this very same ground hosted the very first Test match in the country, and coincidentally against England, in 1889.

In the South Africa camp, there’s youngsters who are looking to cement their spots in the squad and establish themselves as Test cricketers to take South Africa forward.

In such a situation it is crucial to create an environment where it is clear that these youngsters get the backing they need.

“I’ve spoken to Boucher and he said it’s fine that at times you make the wrong decisions out in the middle” said the 24-year-old Zubayr Hamza.

With the backing from the coaches and having done well in the past for the Cobras at St. George’s, the youngster has the necessary foundation to put on a performance fitting of his talent.

All eyes will definitely be on him, after all, he bats at three replacing the great Hashim Amla.

If we are to stand a chance to win this game, the youngster will have to chip in and make contributions to the Proteas side.

But with this English side, it will be tough for the Proteas to take the 30 points. After winning at Newlands, they are oozing with confidence.

“That’s the trademark of success, being able to travel and win games” Jos Buttler insisted.

It is very clear that England are focussed on opening the wounds that Sri Lanka and India were responsible for, and set the bar even higher.

“So, for us to win in Newlands and have a few days off to enjoy that and reflect on a great game is brilliant. But we want to come here and win the series, it’s set up great. We’re going into this game looking forward to try make it 2-1,” Butler concluded.

A second spotlight will be shining on homegrown talent Anrich Nortje in what is coined as his Homecoming.

The 26-year-old fast bowler from Uitenhage is set to make his first appearance at his home ground in the Proteas whites.

His maiden Test wicket was that of Virat Kohli, and he seems to have an appetite for removing the ‘Big Fish’ as we have seen also in this series.

He has been able to highlight some flaws in Joe Root’s technique with his sheer pace and belligerent approach towards the England Captain.

“I’m really excited to be playing in Port Elizabeth, (I’ve) always been sitting here on the grass embarkment watching the games, so it’s really nice to be out here,” said Nortje

The third Test Kicks off on Thursday 16 January at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth as both sides aim to take a lead in the match.
