Aiden Markram emphasised that the only route for him to be considered for national selection in Test and limited-overs cricket is for him to earn his spot through scoring runs.

The start of domestic cricket in South Africa has seen the return of several Proteas stars back to their domestic sides, and one of them is the Test opener, Aiden Markram.

The extended break from the game has been plenty of time to reflect on the tough previous season, but Markram is ready to make a statement when given the opportunities.

“Playing for the Proteas is such a treat and a dream come true. That’s the motivation that drives me at the moment. We just have to perform, whether it’s for the club team or for the Titans, but that’s the main focus.,” he told Crickefanaticsmag.com.

Markram’s been tipped as a future skipper, and that’s been quite humbling. His modest, unassuming attitude when it comes to the game is exemplary.

He’s had his share of ups and downs at the international stage, and he’s looking to take it day by day when it comes to re-announcing himself.

“It’s nice to have that kind of support from the fans. I look up to Dean [Elgar] as a role model, and I’m by no means putting the focus on how to captain the side. I’m starting from scratch and I want to do everything right,” he said when asked what he thinks about fans picking him as the Test captain.

In addition, he’s open to becoming a batting allrounder when required. He’s a useful part-time offspinner, and having a broader range of skills will definitely be a confidence builder. Ultimately, the aim is to be a regular across all formats.

“As a player, I don’t spend too much time thinking about whether or not I’ll be selected. I’ve worked on my fitness as well as my bowling, so I have more options to offer for my team. Ultimately, the position where I’m in is to score as many runs as I can.”
