It was emotionally challenging for Wihan Lubbe to make the decision to move from the Lions to the Warriors, but the decision can only be beneficial for the talented spinning all-rounder, writes Khalid Mohidin.

The South African cricket world was shocked over the last week with massive transfer movement on the franchise scene.

Lubbe was one of the major movers that may have shocked some Fanatics. But I think it’s comfortable to say that the move has the potential to be exceptionally beneficial for the young star who has made it clear that his sites are on playing for the Proteas.

Moving to the Warriors will mean more game time for the former Lions man, who had to fight hard for his place in the Lions setup, especially with the movement up and down regards to Proteas players.

He brings incredible strength and solidity to their young batting lineup and with the ball, he adds the relevant x-factor needed across all formats, especially the shorter formats.

He explained the reason behind his move.

“Regarding my move, it was a very difficult decision because in large of what the Lions and everyone at the Central Gauteng Lions has done for me over the years,” he said exclusively to Cricket Fanatics Magazine.

“In the end, it was more than just one factor that played a part in my final decision to make the move down to PE (to the Warriors).

“I am really excited about the people there. I have had some experience down there and know a lot of the players and staff which will make the transition easier.

“Cricket wise I look forward to learning from the players and especially from Robbie P (Robin Peterson).

“In terms of what I bring, I would like to think that I will offer a lot of flexibility in terms of my batting,” he added.

“I have been fortunate enough to play in different positions and roles over the past two seasons which equips me for what lies ahead. The conditions will allow a bit more bowling as well, which is something I look forward to a lot.”

The 27-year-old had some amazing battles against some of the best players on the domestic scene and he expressed who he is most excited about playing with at his new franchise.

“I am excited to play with Marco Marais, not having to bowl to him in white-ball cricket will be fantastic,” he laughed. “I also look forward to playing with guys like Jon-Jon, Rudi Second and Mo(Yaseen Vallie). There’s a lot of shared experiences between them.”

“To end it off, I am really thankful for my time at the Lions and even more so for the way that my move has been handled,” he said emotionally.
“I have made friendships that will last a lifetime and have the utmost respect for both the players and the staff.

“I look forward to the challenges and my time ahead down in Port Elizabeth.”
