Khalid Mohidin chats to Proteas Women star Laura Wolvaardt about the evolution of the Women’s game and her career so far.

It was the Western Province junior cap ceremony, and Laura was one of the guest speakers. She gave an engaging speech about her journey and connected with the crowd when she mentioned that just a few years ago she was sitting in the same position as her audience, awaiting to receive her first Provincial cap. 

Now Wolvaardt is a star in the South African national side, averages 44.97 in 47 ODIs, is ranked No 9 in the ICC rankings and her cover-drive is as glorious as any player’s in World Cricket today. 

I stood nervously waiting for Laura to stand before me. I know being a journalist comes with certain expectations and etiquette, but this was an important interview for me because she is one of my favourite cricketers.

I took the opportunity to get to know Laura a little better and gain an improved understanding of what it is like to be a Women’s Cricketer in South Africa.
