The Proteas were outplayed by New Zealand in the Champions Trophy semi-final, losing by 50 runs on Wednesday.
South Africa lost the toss and bowled first against New Zealand. They fought hard to get a good start with the ball.
Will Young was caught out by a slower delivery from Lungi Ngidi in the 8th over as New Zealand were reduced to 48-1.
The game was, however, taken away from SA from there on out, thanks to two centuries.
Rachin Ravindra (108 off 101 balls, 13 fours, 1 six) and Williamson (102 off 94 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes) scored brilliant centuries, making sure that New Zealand posted a heavy total.
Both lost their wicket shortly after bringing up their milestone, Ravindra to Rabada and Williamson to Mulder. The pair strung together 164 runs.
Rabada then helped pull things back a little more by castling Tom Latham, who attempted a lap shot against him. New Zealand were reduced to 257/4 in 41.1 overs.
At this point, SA would have been confident that they could stop the New Zealand scoring, but Daryl Mitchell made things hard. He scored 49 off 37 balls to take NZ to 314-5 with just under 4 overs remaining, Ngidi picking up his second wicket.
Kagiso Rabada, however, leaked 19 runs in the 48th over, which returned the control of the innings back to NZ.
Ngidi then conceded 11 before taking the wicket of Michael Bracewell (16).
Glen Phillips’ innings of 49 off 27 (6 fours, 1 six) balls was crucial to pushing New Zealand past 360.
They ended their innings on 362-6. This was the highest total in an ICC Champions Trophy event.
Ngidi was the best wicket-taker for SA and finished with 3-72.
The Proteas had their work cut out for them with the bat, and they were not helped by Ryan Rickelton’s wicket in the 5th over on 17. It was now up to the experienced Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma to set up the chase for their side.
Bavuma started quite slow, but caught up with his runs per balls, while Rassie van der Dussen took the more aggressive approach.
Van Der Dussen brought up his half-century in the 22nd over, after Bavuma brought up his half-century in the 20th over.
South Africa got themselves to 125 in 22.2 overs when Bavuma lost his wicket.
Van Der Dussen took SA to the end of the 27th over but lost his wicket to a brilliant Santner delivery. He scored 69 off 66 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes). SA were reduced to 162-3.
Shortly after, it was 167-4, Heinrich Klaasen out for 3 in the 29th over.
Markram was the next wicket to fall, out for 31, taking SA down to 189-5 in 33 overs.
The Proteas brought up 200 in the 36th over, but Mulder was caught out in the deep.
Wicket No. 7 fell in the 38th over with 212 on the board, and 9 fell with 256 up. It was pretty much over from there.
Miller put in a late charge, as he did in the semi-final of the 50-over World Cup against Australia. He scored 100 off 67 balls (10 fours, 4 sixes), but it was too late for South Africa.
The Proteas lost by 50 runs.
