Temba Bavuma’s 70 proved crucial as South Africa was bowled out for 191, but a 7-13 from Marco Jansen saw Sri Lanka skittled for 42 in a frantic one-and-a-half days of Test cricket.
South Africa was put in to bat first and their performance was shocking. The surface did not seem tricky, but the hosts struggled with the over-head conditions. They found themselves 54-4 in 17.1 overs. They managed to take their total to 80-4, but the day’s play was cut short due to persistent rain.
Day 2 saw more turmoil for the SA batters. They were 191 all-out before lunch. Proteas captain Bavuma scored a crucial 70.
Sri Lanka’s reply was woeful. They were skittled for 42 in 13.5 overs, their lowest innings total.
Jansen was fantastic taking his best figures of 7-13. He was aided by Gerald Coetzee 2-18 and Kagiso Rabada 1-10.
Leading by 149 runs, SA went out to bat again.
South Africa scored 132-3 on Day 2 in their second innings. Aiden Markram top scored with 47 but was unluckily bowled as he looked certain to reach a much-needed milestone.
Bavuma (24*) and Stubbs (17*) will start day three with SA in the lead by 281.
